Initiation Program (3 - 7 yrs) (Barrie Minor Hockey)

PrintInitiation Program (3 - 7 yrs)

2017 - 2018 Season

The Initiation Program is designed for children ages 3 – 7 years just learning to love the game of hockey.

Squirts  3 years

A 20 week program divided into 10 weeks of ‘learn to skate’ followed by 10 weeks of ‘learn to play hockey’.

This is a ‘learn to’ program with emphasis only on fun and introduction.  Participants will be divided after the first week or two into a beginner and novice skating class.

Participants are expected to wear a helmet, full cage, skates, warm jacket and mittens for the first 10 weeks.  When we shift to the 10 week ‘learn to play hockey’, participants will need to wear full hockey equipment including mouthguard and neck protector.  In the 'learn to play hockey' portion of the program, players become Timbits and receive their team jersey.  With the focus shift, pucks are introduced and players learn basic stick handling and enjoy informal scrimmages.

Myte 4 years

This program is designed for participants who have completed the Squirt or NTR ‘Learn to’ programs.  The first 8 weeks will consist of practices followed by 12 weeks of a combination of 1 practice and 1 game per week.  We finish off our season with an exciting Tim Hortons Fun Day!
During the 8 week practice sessions, an on ice instructor will lead the practices, introducing both the players and coaches to valuable practice plans and tools for future team practices and scrimmage games.

Minor Tyke 5 - 6 years

Minor Tykes (5 - 6 years) continue in player development with 20 on ice practices and 20 games.  Teams are formed in September and begin their season in early October.  Teams have the opportunity to participate in tournaments in surrounding areas during the season and we end with our Tim Hortons Fun Day full of games, treats and prizes!
We have a White (intermediate) and Blue (beginner) division.

NEW:  BMHA is excited to announce that we have teamed up with Mariposa School of Skating to deliver a one of a kind introductory edge and skating program to the Minor Tyke age group of players for the upcoming 2017-18 season. This program (Fundamental Edge and Balance) has been specifically designed to build a foundation of balance and edge awareness that is a key first step in the development of players at this particular age and level. Players will be introduced to concepts such as forward and backward inside and outside edges through exercises that are based around detailed repetition. Each team will receive five weeks of instruction with two professional skating instructors from the Mariposa School of Skating that specializes in working with athletes at this age and level. This program is included in the registration fee.  Also new this year, we will offer an introductory goalie program for interested players.  More details will follow.

We also offer a Minor Tyke Player Development program as an extension of our house league Minor Tyke program.  This is 12 weeks of on ice skills and drills.  Players can register online in the Fall, watch our website for more information.
