2016 OHF Champions
Congratulations to the Darick.ca Dominion Lending Bantam AA Team on winning the 2016 OHF Championship held in North York, Ontario. The coaching staff and parents are extremely proud of the team’s accomplishments.  The OHF victory completes a very successful run that realized the team’s ultimate objective that was set at the beginning of the season. The Bantam AA Team defeated the London Jr. Knights (Alliance), Nickel City Sons (NOHA), Mississauga North Stars (GTHL) and the host North York Knights (GTHL) enroute to the championship.

Barrie opened the tournament with a 3-2 loss in the first game of the round robin to the North York Knights, then never looked back.  Barrie won the next three games defeating the Nickel City Sons 3-1, the Mississauga North Stars 4-1 and the London Jr. Knights 6-2.  Barrie placed second after the preliminary round and qualified to face the third place Nickel City Sons in the semi final round.

Barrie’s semi final game was a fast paced, high tempo affair. The boys were strong on both sides of the puck resulting in a 3-1 victory. The win advanced the team to the final versus the North York Knights who were undefeated in their round robin and semi final games.

The final featured the two best teams of the tournament.  After a scoreless first period North York opened the scoring with a power play goal at 8:45 of the second period. The score remained 1-0 until Barrie responded with a power play goal at 7:23 of the third period.  At 4:16 of the third period North York scored an even strength goal to take a 2-1 lead.  With the net empty Barrie tied the game with just 38 seconds remaining to force overtime.  After a 10 minute overtime period the score remained 2-2.  Both teams had scoring chances, however, the goalies were equal to the challenge. Barrie won a critical face off draw in the opposition’s zone which led to a blast by Liam O’Hara from just inside the blue line.  The shot beat the North York Knight’s goaltender at 7:58 of the second overtime period giving Barrie a 3-2 victory and the OHF Championship.

The Bantam AA Team dedicates their 2016 OHF Championship to the memory of Anthony Acchione.
