Initiation Program Announcement
Submitted By Jill Robertson on Monday, June 26, 2017
Hockey Canada recently announced changes to the Initiation Program for 3 - 7 yr olds. As a Hockey Canada member, BMHA will begin to introduce these changes for the 2017 - 2018 season.  BMHA has followed this concept in the Myte and Minor Tyke programs for many years.

Recently, Hockey Canada announced changes to the Initiation Program.  Beginning this fall, all players born 2011 – 2014 will use cross ice (1/2 of regulation size ice) for practice and games.  BMHA is very fortunate to have National Training Rinks (NTR) to use and our Squirt (3 yr olds), Myte (4 yr olds), Minor Tyke (5 – 6 yr olds) and this year Tyke (7 yr olds) house league teams will be scheduled here for games for the season.  Practice locations will vary.

Games at NTR will allow for team benches and use of the score clock to simulate real game situations.

To enhance Hockey Canada’s Player Development Model, BMHA has partnered with NTR, South Simcoe Hockey School and Mariposa School of Skating to focus on the fundamentals such as skating, balance, stopping, turning, etc. in fun and creative surroundings.  Each of the businesses bring a professional understanding of the Long Range Player Development Model, Hockey Canada’s mandate and the core skills that we would like to focus on in these younger age groups.

SQUIRTS – 3 yrs, born 2014

20 week program, NTR Instructors with on ice assistance from our Bantam A and AE teams

Players are divided into beginner and novice groups dependent on skating experience

First 10 weeks is Learn to Skate, second 10 weeks is Learn to Play Hockey

MYTE – 4 yrs, born 2013

20 week program, first 8 weeks with South Simcoe Hockey School once per week to introduce age and skill appropriate practice plans to coaches and players.  The following 12 weeks include 1 practice and 1 scrimmage game per week.  Scrimmages will introduce simple game structure.

MINOR TYKE – 5 – 6 yrs, born 2011 and 2012

20 week program that includes 1 practice and 1 game per week.  Players will also receive as an added bonus, 5 classes of Fundamental Edges and Balance through Mariposa School of Skating the cost of which is covered generously by a Scotiabank donation.  These classes will be incorporated into the team practices.  Also, players interested in trying the position of goalie will be able to attend complimentary ‘Intro to Goalie’ classes with Instruction from South Simcoe Hockey School.  The Minor Tyke teams are tiered into White and Blue divisions to provide more opportunities for players to physically engage in the games.

TYKE – 7 yrs, born 2010

We have moved the Tyke house league program to NTR this fall to prepare for Hockey Canada’s Initiation Program mandate.  All games will be played on the smaller ice surface, however, shared practices will remain on City ice.  This age group will also receive 5 classes of Fundamental Edges and Balance through Mariposa School of Skating incorporated into the team practices.
