Initiation Program (3 - 8 yrs) (Barrie Minor Hockey)

PrintInitiation Program (3 - 8 yrs)

2021 - 2022 Season

The Initiation Program is designed for children ages 3 – 8 years just learning to love the game of hockey.

U4 (Squirts)  3 years

A 20 week program divided into 10 weeks of ‘learn to skate’ followed by 10 weeks of ‘learn to play hockey’.

This is a ‘learn to’ program with emphasis only on fun and introduction.  Participants will be divided after the first week or two into a beginner and novice skating class.

Participants are expected to wear a helmet, full cage, skates, warm jacket and mittens for the first 10 weeks.  When we shift to the 10 week ‘learn to play hockey’, participants will need to wear full hockey equipment including mouthguard and neck protector.  In the 'learn to play hockey' portion of the program, players become Timbits and receive their team jersey.  With the focus shift, pucks are introduced and players learn basic stick handling and enjoy informal scrimmages.

U5 (Mytes) 4 years

This is a 20 week program with players on City of Barrie ice once per week.  We kick off the season with our annual IP Festival in September and the first 10 weeks will consist of skating instruction with Mariposa School of Skating (5 weeks) followed by hockey fundamentals with South Simcoe Hockey School (5 weeks).  The next 10 weeks will include practices with informal scrimmages in a station based format with Hockey Canada recommended split ice.  Finally, we finish off our season with an exciting Tim Hortons Fun Day!

U7 (Minor Tyke) 5 - 6 years

Minor Tykes (5 - 6 years) continue in player development with 20 on ice practices (City of Barrie ice) and 20 scrimmages (NTR ice).  Teams are formed in September with a White (intermediate) and Blue (beginner) division and will have 5 weeks of Mariposa School of Skating instruction followed by 5 weeks of South Simcoe Hockey School hockey fundamentals. There will be weekly scrimmages and we end our season with our Tim Horton's Fun Day full of scrimmages, treats and prizes!

U8 (Minor Novice) 7 years

Minor Novice (7 years) continue in player development with 20 on ice practices (City of Barrie ice) and 20 scrimmages (NTR ice).  Mariposa School of Skating and South Simcoe Hockey School will provide 5 sessions of instruction.  Teams are formed in September and end the season with our Tim Horton's Fun Day full of games, treats and prizes!

Mariposa School of Skating delivers a one of a kind introductory edge and skating program to the Myte, Minor Tyke and Tyke age groups of players. This program (Fundamental Edge and Balance) has been specifically designed to build a foundation of balance and edge awareness that is a key first step in the development of players at this particular age and level. Players will be introduced to concepts such as forward and backward inside and outside edges through exercises that are based around detailed repetition. Each team will receive instruction with two professional skating instructors from the Mariposa School of Skating that specializes in working with athletes at this age and level.

U9 (Novice) 8 yrs

Novice will have a 20 week, 20 practices/12 scrimmages/8 game season.  The first 12 weeks will consist of practices on City of Barrie ice with scrimmages held at NTR.  The final 8 weeks of the season will switch ice so that practices are held at NTR and games will be played on full City of Barrie ice.  Teams will participate in our annual Championship Day.

We will also offer a separate 12 week Tyke Development program and more details will be posted later in the summer.
