Welcome Letter
 2025/26 BMHA U16A Blue Team

Parents & Players,

Welcome to all players, parents and guardians to the 2025-2026 Barrie Colts U16 “A” Blue team tryouts. My name is Don Monteith and I am honored to have been selected as the head coach of the 2025-2026 U16A Blue Team this season.

During the tryouts players will be assigned a Pinney upon their arrival at the rink.  The Pinney’s should be returned to registration table after each session.  Parents are to ensure that correct contact information (email etc) is on file at the registration table before the first tryout session. There are 17 spots available on this team and I am looking to select the best 17 players to create a team of 9 forwards, 6 defence and 2 goaltenders.  All players will be given equal consideration during the tryout process.

Evaluation Skates – Please ensure you review the BMHA 2025-2026 Rep Player Evaluation Policy and process to determine if you need to attend these skates.

Evaluation Skate 1 Saturday April 26th Allandale Blue 12:00 – 1:20 pm
Evaluation Skate 2 Sunday April 27th  Allandale Red 2:00 –  3:20 pm

Scheduled On Ice Tryouts: There are three sessions scheduled to evaluate potential team members –players will be given opportunities in both skill- based and game- based situations to demonstrate their abilities before selections are made.  If the numbers warrant it, the first session will be divided into two groups.

Tryout 1 - Sunday, May 11th                    East Bayfield Green 2:30 – 4:20 pm
Tryout 2 - scrimmage Monday May 12th    Allandale Red 8:00 pm
Tryout 3 - scrimmage Tuesday, May 13th   East Bayfield Green 9:30 pm

Hockey is a demanding environment for both players and parents. In the next three ice sessions each player will be evaluated in several critical areas. This will include skating, passing, stick handling, shooting, and we also evaluate the ability to incorporate all of these skills in actual play. In addition, during the tryouts I will be looking for things such as: work ethic, determination, positive attitude and the ability to focus and listen. Throughout the tryouts, player assessments will be done by independent coaches, and myself. These try-outs were designed to evaluate players as to their ability to perform in this challenging environment – both individually and as a team. The goal is to assess the individual ability of each player in a variety of skill areas and game situations.

Season Commitment: Being part of any team takes commitment.  Part of being part of the Barrie U16 “A” Blue team means you can expect to be at the rink 4-5 sessions per week on average. Practices, games, and team events are not considered voluntary. There will be playoff games during March Break and players will be expected to make a commitment to practices, league games, playoff, and tournaments before accepting to be part of Barrie U16 A Blue team.  In addition, there will be development practices throughout the year to support both goalies, defence and forwards.  Players will be expected to be at the rink and ready to play with all equipment at an agreed time.  We will go over the timelines and essential requirements once the team has been selected.

Tournaments: The team will be participating in the York Simcoe Minor hockey league and in four tournaments throughout the year. Two tournaments will be away tournaments and two will be local tournaments. We will NOT be going to tournaments in the United States. The tournaments will be discussed at the opening team meeting which will be shortly after tryouts.

I believe in open communication between parents, players and the coach, therefore please feel free to ask me any questions, during the tryout process. One rule that will be enforced during tryouts and throughout the year will be No Cameras or Cell Phones in the dressing room.

Thank you once again for your interest in BMHA U16A hockey. Good luck during tryouts.

Sincerely,

Don Monteith,
Coach, BMHA U16A Blue
