U16 BB – Try-out and Team Expectations
Parents, Guardians and Players

Welcome to the 2025-2026 Barrie Colts U16 BB team tryouts. My name is Brian Langman, and I am the U16 BB Coach for the 2025-2026 season. I look forward to coaching this year, and I hope that all players have an excellent try-out, making it difficult for me to choose the best team.

I recognize that the tryout process can be stressful for players and their families. In the spirit of transparency, this letter briefly outlines this year’s expectations and commitments that both players and guardians need to prepare for in order to ensure you have a better understanding as your player goes through the process.

Players will be assigned a piney upon their arrival at the rink. During the first try-out session, players/parents/guardians will be required to confirm that the correct contact information is on file at the registration table. Following the try-out, players must return the piney to the registration table after each session.

Parents are strongly encouraged to read the articles regarding the evaluation process and the associations expectations on the BMHA website. Players will be redirected or invited to the next tryout session using the BMHA website and the team home page. Additional information will be sent out to the email on file closer to the tryout dates. Parents/guardians are reminded to check their spam email to ensure correspondence is not lost.

Evaluation Skates – Please ensure you review the BMHA 2025-2026 Rep Player Evaluation Policy and Process to determine if you need to attend these skates:

Scheduled On-Ice Try-Outs:

During the try-out, I want players to work hard and give their maximum effort. Players should come to the tryout prepared to play in any position, as there is no guarantee of preferred position. There are 17 spots available on this team and I am looking to select the best 17 players to create a team of 9 forwards, 6 defence and 2 goaltenders. Part of the process is to select the players with the appropriate skill for this age and division. Players will be given equal consideration during the process.

There will be two try-outs; the first will consist of skills / drills, and the second will consist of a scrimmage. Tryouts are scheduled for:

Wednesday May 14th at 8:00 p.m. at Allandale Red

Thursday May 15th at 8:00 p.m. at East Bayfield Arena (Green) – Scrimmage

Please check the BMHA website prior to the tryout to confirm there has been no change.

Evaluations:

The players will be evaluated by myself and third-party evaluators. Evaluators will be doing individual assessments during the ice time and will NOT discuss any results with anyone outside the evaluation team. The evaluations of the third-party evaluators will be weighted higher than my own to reduce the likelihood of any personal bias. The evaluators being used are independent of the BMHA and this age group. During the tryouts, players will be evaluated on the following:

1. Hockey Skills (skating, passing, shooting, puck control) and hockey knowledge.
2. Work ethic, focusing on the task and not misbehaving.
3. Attitude and behaviour / ability to follow instructions / coachability.

Team Commitment:

Being part of any team takes dedication and commitment. As a team member of the Barrie Colts U16 BB team, you can expect to be at the rink 4-5 times per week on average. Practices, games and team events are not considered voluntary; players are expected to attend all practices and games unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Team Rules:

A set of Team Rules have been drafted, and it is expected that all players and legal guardians will sign-off on the rules. (Some rule examples are: 1. Players agree to attend all games in the proper attire, 2. Players late for practice are required to skate two hard laps, etc.) The intent of the rules is to ensure we build a culture of accountability and support to ensure we have success on and off the ice.

Season:

In accordance with the OHF seasonal calendar, we can begin sanctioned team activities on September 2nd; any team events / practices / training sessions, scheduled after this date will be mandatory, (pending extenuating circumstances).

Games may begin as early as September 29th, 2025, and the season will go to April 10th, 2026 or until we are eliminated from play. There will be a black-out period between December 22 to 26, but there will be games played, or practices held during March Break. (If you can, please avoid any vacations during this period as we will be in playoffs)

Tournaments:

We are permitted to play in up to four tournaments. I plan on entering the team into an early-bird tournament in September, one before the year is over, and one in the New Year. I also intend to enter a tournament that is scheduled for December 26-29, 2025.

I look forward to seeing you at the rink, and I want to wish everyone the best of luck during this exciting time!

Cheers,

Brian Langman
