Colts Punch Ticket to Silver Stick Finals!!
The TNR Doors Barrie Colts Minor Bantam AA team enjoyed another fabulous weekend of hockey recently at the Whitby Regional Silver Stick Qualifier. They closed out the weekend with a 4-1-1 record to take home the gold and punch their ticket to the finals in Newmarket this January!
The team got off to a positive start on Friday, with decisive wins over the Whitby Wildcats (4-1) and the Vaughan Rangers (4-0) in preliminary round play. The team was not at its best for the Saturday games, when a couple empty net goals sealed a 6-3 loss to the Ajax Knights to begin the day. Later, the Colts, who had struggled to score at their accustomed pace, managed to tie the Wheatfield Blades team 3-3 with a late goal.
Returning to Whitby on Sunday morning for a rematch with the Knights, the Minor Bantam players and coaches knew they would need to return to their trademark style of hard work, relentless hustle and solid teamwork, if they were going to achieve their goal of qualifying for the January finals tournament. The fans were not disappointed as the team overcame an early deficit to ultimately defeat and eliminate the Ajax Knights 3-2!
Next up, in the Championship game, the York Mills Rangers battled hard but ultimately fell to the grit, resilience and stamina of the Barrie team, with a final score of 4-2!
Following the celebration, the team began to turn its focus to their upcoming Triple 20 Shootout Tournament in London. Congratulations on the Championship and best of luck in London and Newmarket for the Silver Stick Finals (January 9-12, 2020).
